Donkin Houses reflect the architecture of the period in which
they were built in displaying the High Victorian styles. Evident
in the houses are the wooden verandas, as well as white and
black striped corrugated iron roofing.
Cast
iron decoration, part of the Victorian era, is also common on
the Houses. Victorian architecture as a whole was for a long
time generally condemned as heavy handed and derivative. But now
it is seen as remarkably rich and varied. The architecture was
also seen as having looked forward rather than backwards, adding
to the fact that the Donkin Houses have stood the test of time.
In the mid 1960’s during the
restoration of the Donkin Houses, concrete balconies had to be
demolished and authentic wood veranda’s were carefully erected
in their place. Care had to be taken because of crumbling bricks
and plaster . The careful and authentic work during the
restoration phase has ensured that the Victorian architecture
has been maintained through to modern times.
